Dennis Oliver uses archive photos and extensively researched color illustrations to examine the Pzkpfw Ill and the Panzer units that took part in the early battles in North Africa. This volume of the TankCraft series, the first of two parts, examines the story of the tank's North African service beginning with the arrival of Panzer-Regiment 5 in Tripoli and ending with the advance to El Alamein in late 1942. Although less heavily armored than its British opponents it was sturdy and reliable and its main armament was the equal of any enemy anti-tank gun it was called upon to face. It outnumbered all the other types in service with the Afrikakorps at that time and when compared to the Pzkpfw I and Pzkpfw II designs it was a potent, modern weapons system. The descent was carried out with the help of a cable Bowden. The Pzkpfw Ill was the most effective tank available to the German army in North Africa during the battles of 1941. The machine gun telescopic sight was built into the driver’s mechanic’s observation device. The elevation angle was + 25 °, the declination was 10 °. In the center of the frontal sheet, a ball mount of a course machine gun was mounted, which allowed firing over the horizon in the sector of 30 °. The observation hatch had also a gunner’s radio operator, though of a much smaller size – 150×75 mm. To observe the terrain at the disposal of the driver, there was a viewing slot 120×3 mm in size in the right front side plate of the case, also covered with 50 mm bulletproof glass from the inside. Outside, it was closed with 28 mm armor cap. In front of him in the front sheet of the podashennoy box there was a viewing window with dimensions of 390×90 mm with 50 mm triplex glass block. The workplace of the driver mechanic was located on the right. The crew was located in the control section in the front of the hull this is a driver mechanic and a radio operator shooter.
